The Engineering Project Manager Summary

The Project Manager – Mechanical Design will manage multiple projects simultaneously, while working with several project teams. This person is responsible for the design, engineering and implementation of various complex systems or machines and will provide technical project leadership while being responsible for all aspects of project management, including start-up, obtaining applicable permits, preparing tenders, budgets, estimates and schedules. This position provides the individual with an opportunity to apply creative solutions with direct application of engineering principles.

The Engineering Project Manager Job Duties

Project Management
  • Communicate with customers to gather project requirements and present options to solve their issue.
  • Manage scope, cost, schedule, quality, functionality and customer expectations
  • Manage site meetings, all on-site personnel, paperwork and any other documents generated by project
  • Maintain accurate project financial reporting including forecasting of expected costs, identifying reasons for any cost differentials from project bid to execution to completion
  • Create, complete mechanical & electrical assemblies will full drawing packages by delegating the work to the design team members. 
  • Conduct regular design reviews both internally and with the customers.
  • Ensure revision controls and project documentation is adequate
  • Ensure compliance with relevant regulations and industry standards
  • Ensure that work processes and procedures conform to internal Quality management standards.
  • Ensure any on-site and internal issues are resolved and dealt with in a timely manner
  • Conduct project post job reviews in order to identify areas for improvement; make recommendations based on findings.
Business Development
  • Build and foster a network of clients to create new opportunities for revenue growth
  • Communicate with internal & external resources to budget projects. 
  • Prepare tenders, budgets, estimates and quotations along with schedules to complete projects
  • Discuss & Negotiate proposals with clients.
  • Perform experiments to validate concepts & reduce risk as required
People Management
  • Provide advice and mentoring for direct reports
  • Organize regular one on one meetings with direct reports to discuss, growth, areas for improvement, and employee satisfaction.
  • Identify and facilitate required training for direct reports.
  • Perform other duties as required.

 

The Engineering Project Manager Requirements

  • Degree or diploma in engineering, design, drafting or equivalent experience
  • 5 or more years’ previous management experience in an industrial environment with proven leadership and people management abilities.
  • Strong management, communication and leadership skills
  • Attention to detail, and high level or accuracy.
  • High level of integrity and accountability.
  • Ability to read technical drawings, mechanical, structural, electrical, & P&IDs.
  • Ability to use design tools like Solidworks and Autocad is an asset
  • Ability to work safely in many environments with strong knowledge of OH&S regulations
  • PMP designation an asset
  • Understanding of instrumentation and control technology with common engineering tools and work processes
  • Ability to work proactively in a fast-paced team environment and work to timelines
  • Flexibility to adjust to shifting priorities and deadlines
  • A solid understanding of all trades and techniques with a focus on Construction and Industrial millwrighting, process and power piping, custom and structural steel and alloy fabrications, machining and machine building.
  • Able to build and maintain lasting relationships with clients, employees and any other stakeholders
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft computer software (e.g. Excel, Word, Microsoft Project, etc.) and email
  • Entrepreneurial work ethic

The Engineering Project Manager Work Conditions

  • Ability to attend and conduct meetings.
  • Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals.
  • Overtime as required.
  • Exposure to extremes of heat and cold – work both indoors and outdoors as project requires.
  • Exposure to high decibel levels, dust, dirt and to other media requiring Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Schedule Flexibility as required by certain projects.
  • Willingness to travel to customer sites
  • Hazards associated with the trade
