The position of Welder Apprentice reports to the Project Manager, Shop Manager or Site Supervisor

The position of the Welder – Apprentice is responsible for assisting experienced welders in different tasks and gain hands-on trade experience in the shop & field. This position will involve both, theoretical instruction and practical training to ensure that the apprentice develops the necessary skills for becoming a proficient welder. 

The ability to multi-task and move from job to job is a must.  Additionally, the Welder – Apprentice will be required to read and understand production drawings, blueprints, work orders and other written instructions.

Job Duties

Be able to work independently and as part of a teamRead and interpret blueprints or welding Symbols and process specifications

• Be able to work independently and as part of a team
• Read and interpret blueprints or welding Symbols and process specifications
• Operate equipment and tools to fabricate and weld both Ferrous and Non-Ferrous metals
• Operate manual or semi-automatic welding equipment to fuse metal segments using processes such as Gas Tungsten Arc
• Welding (GTAW), Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW) and Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW)
• Operate manual or semi-automatic flame-cutting equipment
• Operate brazing and soldering equipment
• Operate metal shaping machines such as brakes, shears and other metal straightening and bending machine
• Operate job-related equipment (cut off saw, ironworker, hydraulic presses, shears, drill presses, torches, oxygen lances, pneumatic/power actuated tools, & plasma cutters)
• Assist and complete documentation for quality control of fabrication and production.
• Fabricate, join, fit/tack, and repair equipment, fixtures and various types of metal objects and structures using various welding techniques.
• Maintain safe work practices and adhere to safe work procedures.
• Maintain Fabrication and Company machinery in good and safe working order and adhere to safe work procedures for all equipment and tools
• Liaise with internal and external customers for resolution of data and technical problems and issues that arise during the job
• Assists in providing information for project review and post work reviews
• Implements corrective actions and changes as directed by supervisor
• Ensures accuracy and completion of assigned tasks and projects
• Proactively seeks and accomplishes tasks that lead to a safe, efficient, and productive work environment
• Other assigned work as required 

Requirements

• • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent
  • Enrolment in a Welding Apprenticeship Program is considered an asset
  • CWB tickets are considered an asset.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
  • Ability to work independently in a busy environment
  • Experience with routine maintenance operations
  • Solid interpersonal skills 
  • Able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing
  • Able to work well under pressure
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Computer literate
  • As a condition of employment, the successful candidate must meet all Government of Canada security screening requirements and maintain the applicable security clearance(s) for the duration of their employment in the role.

Work Conditions

• 24/7 availability may be required
• Ability to lift and carry objects up to 50 lbs.
• Travel to off-site locations as work requires
• Manual dexterity required to use power and hand tools
• Frequently noisy working environment
• Safety equipment will be required, e.g. steel-toed safety boots, safety glasses/goggles, etc.
• Overtime as required
• Hazards associated with the trade
• Work both indoors and outdoors
• May be exposed to construction sites
• Employee may be exposed to uncomfortable work settings; may have long combinations of standing, crouching or sitting
